At the start of the school year, Joensuu schools are changing the guidelines regarding the use of smart devices during school hours. On 1 August 2025, an update to the rules of conduct entered into force in the schools of Joensuu city and in university practice schools, prohibiting the use of smart devices during the school day, except when permitted by a teacher or the principal. A smart device may be used with the permission of a teacher or principal for learning purposes, personal healthcare, or as a learning aid.
Smart devices must be kept in a personal storage place, such as a backpack, locker, or other location designated by the school. The phone must be kept on silent or switched off throughout the school day.
The aims of the smart device ban include, among other things:
· creating environment that supports brain well-being
· reducing brain strain
· improving learning outcomes
· supporting concentration
In upper secondary schools, the use of smart devices is prohibited during lessons.
